The American Music Awards
by Barbara Fletcher

And you thought that Monday-night TV was boring. Tonight you can spend a couple of hours with Britney Spears and LL Cool J -- hosts of the 27th annual American Music Awards.

Live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, you can watch this year's awards -- and antics -- on CTV, starting at 8:00 PM.

Of the 20 awards -- presented in Pop Rock, Soul/Rhythm & Blues, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin, and Soundtrack -- Faith Hill tops the list with five nominations. Creed is next in line with four.

And Marc Anthony, Britney Spears, 'N Sync, Destiny's Child, and Eminem each scored three nominations each.

Controversial rapper Eminem's nominations include Favourite Male Artist Pop or Rock Music (shared with Kid Rock and Marc Anthony), Favourite Artist Rap/Hip-Hop Music (shared with DMX -- who won the award in 2000 -- and Dr. Dre), and Internet Artist of the Year Award.

'N Sync has been shortlisted for Favorite Band Duo or Group Pop or Rock Music, Favorite Album Pop or Rock Music, and Internet Artist of the Year Award.

Spears shares a nomination for Internet Artist of the Year Award, and is also a contender for Favourite Female Artist Pop or Rock Music with Christina Aguilera, Faith Hill, and Celine Dion, and for Favourite Album Pop or Rock Music with Creed and 'N Sync.

Canadian superstar Celine Dion has also been nominated for Favourite Artist Adult Contemporary along with Marc Anthony and Faith Hill.

And in a departure from the nominations for the rival Grammy Awards set for February 21, there is no mention of either Madonna or U2.

Part of the popularity of the American Music Awards lies in the fact that nominees are chosen by the public, and not by record companies, corporations, or music industry execs. Winners are determined by twenty-thousand randomly-selected members of the American public -- the people Executive Producer Dick Clark refers to as the "people that listen to the radio and buy the records."

To encourage audience participation, Internet users can vote online for the Internet Artist of the Year Award. This year's contenders include 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Creed, Destiny's Child, and Faith Hill. The winner will be announced during the telecast.

Viewers can expect performances by Jennifer Lopez, 3 Doors Down, host Britney Spears, Outkast, Billy Gilman, Jessica Simpson, Martina McBride, Aerosmith, Pink, Ricky Martin, SheDaisy, and Marilyn Manson.

And don't expect to see any of these performers at this year's Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. There is an "understanding" that artists who agree to perfom on the AMAs are not allowed to perform at the Grammys.

You weren't really going to do your laundry tonight anyway, were you? So take a look at the list of all nominees and get ready for some serious music awards viewing. If anything, it will at least get you ready for the crop of awards shows spanning the next few months.
